Bunlar must, shall, will, should, would, can, could, may ve might’dır. Tüm modal verblerde olduğu gibi, Must ve Mustn’t yardımcı fiillerinden sonra da, mutlaka bir Verb eylem kullanılır ve bu eylem hiçbir ek alamaz. Must zorunluluk ve gereklilik, mustn’t ise yasak bildiren yardımcı fiildir. Kuvvetli tavsiyelerde should yerine kullanılır. Örneğin, bir aydır baş ağrısı çeken bir arkadaşımıza “You should go to a doctor” diyebiliriz, ancak bu cümleyi “You must go to a doctor” şeklinde kurarsak, vermiş olduğumuz tavsiyenin anlamı güçlenir. Aynı şekilde shouldn’t yerine de, mustn’t kullanarak verdiğimiz tavsiyelere daha vurgulu ve güçlü bir anlam yükleriz. Örneğin; “You shouldn’t lie to your mother” dediğimizde yine doğru bir cümle kurmuş oluruz, fakat “You mustn’t lie to your mother” cümlesi, çok daha güçlü ve sert bir anlama sahiptir. Mustın bir diğer kullanıldığı yer ise “güçlü tahminler“dir. Örneğin çok çalışkan ve her gün okula gelen bir arkadaşınız var, bir gün okula gelmedi ve neden gelmediği hakkında tahmin yürütüyorsunuz, her gün okula geldiği ve ilk defa gelmemezlik yaptığı için “She must be ill” dediğimizde güçlü bir tahmin yürütmüş oluruz.
